Besca awarded SEK 7 million by the Swedish Energy Agency – surpasses SEK 10 million in external funding
Besca has been awarded SEK 7 million from the Swedish Energy Agency for a four‑year research and development project together with leading battery researchers at Uppsala University. With this decision, Besca surpasses SEK 10 million in external funding from public and private actors — strengthening both its battery materials program and its platform for high‑performance activated carbon for water purification.
During the past months, Besca has received targeted support that has built a strong foundation within activated carbon and PFAS remediation. The new project represents a significant reinforcement of the company’s second business area, where the same plasma‑based platform technology can be used for both energy storage and water purification with only minor technical adjustments.
“With this decision, we pass SEK 10 million in external financing from public and private actors. It is a clear signal that our technology addresses real societal challenges — and that the trust in our team is strong,” says Karolina Gahne, CEO of Besca.
Besca’s plasma process converts locally sourced, plant‑based carbon into advanced materials with high performance. The technology is designed to enable circular, climate‑positive value chains and reduce dependence on fossil and geopolitically sensitive raw materials — whether the end product is used in batteries or in the purification of contaminated water.
The new project will evaluate and test several material variants in collaboration with research groups at Uppsala University. The results are expected to contribute to both improved anode materials and more efficient activated carbon for water purification.
With this approval, Besca now has four applications submitted, four approved, and four projects running — a strong signal of the technology’s relevance, scalability, and execution capability.
